ART THERAPY ACROSS INDIANA
IndiATA advances art therapy in Indiana through professional connection, education, public understanding and advocacy.

We connect Hoosiers with the profession, support Indiana art therapists and students, strengthen relationships across systems and communities, and work toward a state where qualified art therapists are understood, recognized and accessible.

START WHERE YOU ARE
I AM…

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO INDIATA?

Art therapy intersects with mental health, healthcare, education, public policy, community life, professional practice and the arts. Start with the information that matters to you.

ART + BRAIN + CREATIVITY

YOUR BRAIN DOES A LOT WHEN YOU CREATE.

Art-making engages perception, movement, attention, decision-making, memory, emotion, imagination and meaning-making. Research continues to reveal how complex creative processes are.

01
CREATIVITY IS A WHOLE-BRAIN COLLABORATION.

Creative cognition depends on interaction among multiple brain systems rather than a simplistic “creative right brain.” Contemporary neuroscience describes creativity as requiring coordination across distributed networks and both hemispheres.

45

45 MINUTES OF ART-MAKING WAS ENOUGH TO MEASURE A BIOLOGICAL CHANGE.

In a study of 39 healthy adults, salivary cortisol was measured before and after 45 minutes of visual art-making. Cortisol decreased significantly after art-making, and prior art experience did not determine who experienced the effect.

45 MINUTES 39 ADULTS MEASURABLE CORTISOL CHANGE
02

CREATING IS DIFFERENT FROM SIMPLY BEING BUSY.

A 2025 preregistered study compared painting with a noncreative active control condition. Painting produced a selective reduction in anxiety beyond processes shared with the control task, while involving cognitive engagement and physiological response.

THE CREATIVE PART MATTERS.
03

DRAWING, PAINTING AND SCULPTING DO NOT ASK THE BRAIN TO DO EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

Research using EEG, fMRI and fNIRS has begun examining brain activity during different forms of art-making. Findings point toward differences in neural activity associated with creative media and processes, while the science is still developing.

04

ART-MAKING IS A COMPLEX HUMAN PROCESS.

Creative work can bring multiple processes into the same moment: sensory information, physical movement, image-making, choice, experimentation, attention, emotion, memory and meaning.

MATERIAL. MOVEMENT. IMAGE. DECISION. MEANING.
ART THERAPY IS MORE THAN THE EFFECTS OF MAKING ART

ART-MAKING CAN HAVE AN EFFECT. ART THERAPY ADDS A CLINICAL RELATIONSHIP.

Art-making itself can affect attention, emotion, cognition and physiological processes. Art therapy adds something different: a trained art therapist, psychotherapeutic relationship, clinical assessment, psychological theory, treatment goals and intentional use of the creative process.

ART CAN BE POWERFUL.

ART THERAPY IS A PROFESSION.
FOR INDIANA LEGISLATORS + POLICYMAKERS

ART THERAPY IS PART OF INDIANA’S MENTAL HEALTH WORKFORCE.

Art therapists are master’s-level mental health professionals educated in psychotherapy, human development, assessment, ethics, the creative process and clinical use of art-making. Art therapy is not simply using art in another profession; it is a distinct mental health profession with its own graduate education, clinical training, ethical standards and national credentials.

INDIANA LICENSURE

Indiana currently does not have a separate state art therapy license.

CLINICAL PREPARATION

Indiana graduate programs may prepare art therapists for another behavioral-health license, such as mental health counseling, while national art therapy credentialing remains separate.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY

Indiana has considered art therapy licensure legislation multiple times, including legislation in 2020 and 2023.

WHY THIS MATTERS IN INDIANA

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION AFFECTS PEOPLE, SYSTEMS AND ACCESS.

PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING

“Art therapist” describes specific professional education and clinical training. Clear professional standards help Hoosiers distinguish qualified art therapists from people offering art-based services without equivalent preparation.

WORKFORCE RECOGNITION

Art therapists already work across behavioral health, healthcare, education and community settings. Federal occupational classification recognizes Art Therapists as an occupation.

ACCESS

Professional recognition affects how easily systems can identify, hire, credential and reimburse specialized providers.

CONSUMER PROTECTION

Professional licensure establishes standards for qualification, scope, accountability and use of a protected professional identity.

15 STATES + THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

ART THERAPY REGULATION IS NOT UNPRECEDENTED.

Art therapy is regulated as a mental health profession in multiple states and the District of Columbia, either through dedicated art therapy licenses or related professional licenses.

INDIANA EDUCATION + WORKFORCE

INDIANA HAS ALREADY BUILT ART THERAPY EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE.

Indiana has graduate-level pathways preparing art therapists for clinical practice, including programs that integrate art therapy education with preparation for Indiana mental health counseling licensure.

Indiana art therapists are already educated, training, working and serving Hoosiers across mental health, healthcare, community health, education and other settings.

Art therapy is a multifaceted clinical profession aligned with needs Indiana is actively trying to meet: strengthening the behavioral-health workforce, expanding accessible ways people can engage in care, supporting prevention and community health, and serving Hoosiers across ages, abilities and settings.

The policy question is how Indiana recognizes, regulates and fully uses this existing workforce asset.
