INDIANA ART THERAPY EDUCATION

ACADEMIC FOUNDATION
Graduate art therapy programs combine psychological assessment, human development, psychopathological theory, and cultural humility with hands-on, multi-modal artistic expression.
Students complete supervised field practicums and internships, engaging in direct mental health service delivery across medical centers, community mental health facilities, schools, residential treatment settings, and private practices.
INSTITUTIONS & DEGREES
Master of Arts in Art Therapy. A two-year, full-time program integrating clinical therapy training within an urban art school environment, emphasizing studio practice, trauma-informed care, research, and community partnership. Prepares graduates for ATCB Provisional Registration (ATR-P) and Indiana LMHCA licensure.
Master of Arts in Art Therapy (MAAT) with an emphasis in counseling. A three-year, low-residency format for distance learners: two on-campus residencies and one virtual residency per year, paired with online coursework and local clinical placement.
M.A. in Mental Health Counseling — Art Therapy Track. A clinical mental health counseling degree with a concentrated art therapy track, combining core counseling curriculum with hands-on art therapy training and dual-credentialing preparation.
ACADEMIC STANDARDS
Graduate art therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE). Accreditation evaluates institutional quality, faculty ratio, course standards, and clinical supervision requirements, and can change status over time — confirm a program's current standing directly with the school. Accreditation applies to academic programs, never to individual students or practitioners.
The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) is the national professional membership organization. AATA establishes educational standards, publishes ethics guidance, and leads national public advocacy. AATA does not grant individual credentials or state licenses. IndiATA operates as the local Indiana chapter of AATA.
CAREER TRAJECTORY
Complete an accredited graduate program in art therapy, including required studio, clinical, and theory hours.
Apply for Provisional Registered Art Therapist status upon graduation while acquiring post-degree supervised clinical experience.
Achieve Registered Art Therapist status and complete national board certification examinations administered by ATCB.
Pursue Indiana mental health counseling licensure (LMHCA transitioning to LMHC) through the BHHS board alongside ATCB credentials. Indiana does not currently offer a standalone art therapy license.
APPLICANT PREPARATION
Demonstrate proficiency in diverse fine art media (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media) through a curated portfolio.
Complete required undergraduate coursework in general psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, and studio arts.
Engage in human services, community art programs, volunteer work, or mental health assistant positions prior to entry.
Prepare professional and academic letters of recommendation alongside a clear personal statement on professional purpose.
