Art therapy is a mental health profession. It integrates active art-making, the creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.
ART THERAPY
Art therapy is provided by a professional with graduate art therapy education and supervised clinical training, within the professional's credentials, licensure, ethical responsibilities, and scope of practice.
ART-MAKING OUTSIDE ART THERAPY
Art materials, art-making, and creative experiences may be therapeutic, expressive, supportive, or meaningful. Using art alone does NOT make a service art therapy.
Counseling, social work, psychology, coaching, wellness, education, or another helping profession may include art materials or creative process. That does NOT establish art therapy qualification unless the professional is also qualified to practice art therapy.
TRAINING + QUALIFICATIONS
A master's degree is necessary for entry-level practice in art therapy.
GRADUATE CLINICAL PREPARATION
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS INCLUDE
ATCB CREDENTIALS + BOARD CERTIFICATION
For individuals who have completed the applicable degree or education requirements and are practicing in a qualified supervisory relationship. Beginning in June 2024, ATR-P is required to apply for ATR.
An art therapy credential identifying completion of ATCB education requirements and the required supervised post-graduate art therapy clinical experience.
Board certification for a registered art therapist who has met ATCB board-certification requirements, including passing the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination.
An optional specialized ATCB supervisor credential for an ATR-BC who meets ATCB requirements for art therapy supervision qualifications.
INDIANA PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE
An art therapist may also hold an Indiana professional license in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or another regulated profession. A state professional license identifies authorization within that licensed profession; it does NOT by itself establish professional art therapy education, an ATCB credential, or ATCB board certification.
NATIONAL ART THERAPY CREDENTIALING
ATCB credentials and board certification identify professional qualifications specifically in art therapy. They are distinct from any separate state professional license a clinician may hold.
